Well the main reason a dolphin
would swim a long distance is to find food. While some
dolphins can reach speeds of 18 to 22 mph for short
bursts, most swim along at about three to seven mph.
At that speed, with rest periods included, a dolphin
would have the ability to swim about 100 miles in a
day. Some dolphins, however, travel within a smaller
area called a home range.
