There are more species of bony fishes in the world than all other vertebrates combined. The total number of fish species living in the sea is more than 22,000. It is hard to tell an exact number because not all the species have been discovered yet. Some species may have been counted twice because the males and females look so different, and some may have been counted twice because the young and old look so different.
